Gundog Day at West Wycombe Park – 11th July 2010
This year saw well over 100 entries to the annual funday, which kept the judges of Bob Marcham, Belinda Routledge, Jill Gosling John Stubbs, Derek and Carol Buckland very busy. In the past this day has often been wet but not this year, quite the opposite in fact with competitors looking for shade as the picture shows.
For each of the classes dogs had to complete three tests. For Open dogs there was a long double mark, a blind close to the river bank, and a double comprising a mark and a blind. Novice dogs were required to complete less difficult versions of these.
For Puppies and Novice Dog Novice Handlers the tests consisted of double mark, one of these being in the river, a mark in the water with a blind on land, and finally a blind saluted by a shot. At the end there were run offs in both Open and Novice to determine the results
The Society would like to thank Sir Edward Dashwood for allowing us to use the land, judges who gave up their day to adjudicate, and all members who helped and make the day so successful.

Retriever Puppy & Novice Working Test 20 June 2010
July 22nd, 2010 in Retrievers, TestsThere were 52 entries for the Chiltern Puppy Novice working test, held on 20 June at Lindon Lake (Part of the Woburn Estate) by kind permission of His Grace the Duke Of Bedford. The judges were Karen McCarthy, Alan Buckland, Sue Berman and Will Organ.
On such a warm day it was good to have the lake at our disposal and two of the tests, both for Puppy and Novice involved retrieves off water. Another two were either blinds or marks on land but crossing quite deep ditches. The final test, a walk up was in fields of uncut grass, and for a marked retrieve this proved quite testing, not to mention losing a few dogs to run-ins.
In the puppy group there was a three dog run off to determine places.
A thoroughly enjoyable day as always at Woburn. Thanks must go to the judges and also the stewards and helpers, without whom it would not have been possible.

Spaniel & Retriever Doubles Working Test 6 June 2010
June 6th, 2010 in Retrievers, Spaniels, TestsBurrow Farm, Hambleden by kind permission of Mr Palmer
We had ideal weather and scenic countryside for our test in the Chiltern Hills.
The judges Bob Marcham for the retrievers and Ron Walford for the spaniels were very efficient and helpful with their advice and encouragement. We were very lucky in the help we had with dummy throwers, gate marshal to keep the sheep from straying onto the road and Geoff Ford who helped set the tests (and the rest! )
In a friendly atmosphere 16 competitors, 8 Spaniels and 8 retrievers with a range of abilities from a very first test to Open were paired by draw. The competitors took the day in the friendly manner it was envisaged, although competitive the main reason was to enjoy their dogs and learn where further practice is needed.
The winning doubles are;
1st Copperwheat Kenton Lab Dog run by Cathy Barrowclough
Woodash Fortune ESS Dog run by Louise Mendonca
2nd Millrythe Tasmania GR Bitch run by Ray Gosling
Gold Seabright of Bucks CDS run by Ronald Henry
3rd Gameflight Naf Lab Bitch run by Mike Waldren
Perrygreen Copper Cocker Dog run by Carla Nieuwenhuizen
4th Buckiebrae Duke Lab Dog run by Maureen Aitken
Dolly Moonbeam with Lanfordshire ESS Bitch run by Martin Quinn
The winning individual handlers and dogs who received the trophies are;
Spaniel Gold Seabright of Bucks CDS run by Ronald Henry
Retriever Hamford Thistle Lab Bitch run by Martyn Riches
Cathy must be very pleased with her result as this was her first test.
Congratulations to all the winning dogs and we look forward to putting this test on again to take advantage of our club having both retrievers and spaniels and such a lovely group of competitors.

Open AV Retriever Working Test 16 May 2010
May 18th, 2010 in Retrievers, TestsMoor Farm, Lane End.
The Chiltern’s Open AV Retriever working test was held on 16 May at Moor Farm, Lane End by kind permission of Mr Sedden and James Cripps.
Light intermittent rain was the order of the day, with an absolute cloud burst at the end.
With a good field of 31 dogs, three tests were held in the morning, two in woodland and a third on a steep grass bank with a sprinkling of small trees and bushes. The actual test consisted of a double blind, no shot, for which about a quarter of the field scored a maximum 20. Test 2, a single blind of about 60yds was far more trouble-some. Dogs preferring to follow a track rather than go straight. The third test; a mark and blind clearly challenged a number of dogs although there were only two failures.
After lunch the day continued with a two dog walk up on a grassy field, with dummies being thrown on the left-hand side into a Christmas tree plantation, and on the right on to the grassy field. Both retrieves tested the marking ability of the dogs. A fifth test was being run in the adjacent wood.
At the end, a run off was needed to separate second and third, which gave us a full set of results.
My thanks to the judges and all my stewards and helpers. They were magnificent.

Puppy,Novice & Open Spaniel Gundog Working Test 9 May 2010
May 9th, 2010 in Spaniels, TestsBurnt Platt Wood, Peppard Common, Nettlebed. Judges Ben Randall and Steve Russell
Report Geoff Ford
On an overcast day with a cool breeze blowing from the North we started promptly with the two judges Steve Russell and Ben Randall. They judged the 15 puppies first followed by the 15 novice dogs, giving each dog a long hunt with a seen and blind retrieve.
After a short break the 14 open dogs had long runs with a seen retrieve thrown but being sent first for a very very long blind retrieve and then the seen retrieve ending with a run off for first and second.
The judges comment at the prize giving was how high the standard of all the dogs was and that it had been a pleasure to judge them.
Our thanks go to our hosts for the use of the ground and to the dummy throwers and stewards.

Spaniel and Retriever Doubles Working Test
September 27th, 2009 in Retrievers, Spaniels, TestsMoor Farm, Lane End
27th September 2009
Venue by kind permission of Mr Seddon Cripps and Mr James Cripps
Judges: Bill Parrott and Malcolm Timms
L-R: David Reeve, John Lyons, Sharon Groves, Judge Bill Parrot, Gillian Lawes, Judge Malcolm Timms,
Jane Gould, Christine McCrory, Ron Walford, John Wellings
Eighteen dogs, spaniels and retrievers, handlers, helpers and judges met on a bright and sunny morning at Moor Farm. We all moved to a grass lane in the woods where the teams worked their dogs.
The Retriever under judge Bill Parrott walked to heal whilst the Spaniel under Malcolm Timms worked through the shrubby undergrowth next to the path. A shot was fired to the front, dummy thrown and the Retriever asked to retrieve the dummy whilst the Spaniel sat up.
The team worked and walked on, another shot with a nearer dummy was thrown for the Spaniel then the Retriever asked to go back for a blind behind, off the path marked by a shot.
For test two, the teams were asked to send first the Spaniel for a blind with shot then the Retriever for a blind with shot past the Spaniels drop. There was then a run off for two of the Spaniels in the cover and for two of the teams in the turnip field.
We all had such a good day with a chance for retriever handlers to see what is expected of Spaniels and visa versa. The inexperienced handlers were given helpful advice by the judges and everyone gained something from the day.
